Weather Map Handbook

Weather Map Handbook

gotoshop

Product Details

The science of forecasting has not changed, but the Internet and new marvels of technology have completely redefined the process. It is not a rare thing for weather hobbyists and National Weather Service forecasters to get a product from the very same site. With more and more charts and tools appearing on the Internet by the week, how do you make sense of the avalanche of weather imagery and data?

Using a double-page format, the Weather Map Handbook demonstrates nearly every type of weather map, image, and product in common use. An overview of each item’s origin, purpose, shortfalls, and tips are outlined. Standards for analysis symbology and chart markings are summarized. The surface, 850 mb, 700 mb, 500 mb, and 300-200 mb charts get two pages each, complete with philosophy, objectives, and techniques for each chart. Thickness, isentropic, and Q vector products get their own sections.

The WSR-88D Doppler Radar, in use by the United States weather services, has played a vast part in the weather information revolution. In the Weather Map Handbook, it gets thirty pages packed with the fundamentals and algorithms of the WSR-88D. Much of this information is obscure and nearly impossible to find. From the workings of the Composite Reflectivity product to the exact process used by the Mesocyclone Detection Algorithm to deconstruct a radar scan, any NEXRAD radar product on the Internet can be understood. There is even a range-height nomogram for each volume coverage pattern.

From the Eta to the MM5, from the GFS to the GEM, each numerical forecast model is revealed in incredible detail. Ensemble forecasts are highlighted. The satellite chapter explains visible, infrared, and water vapor imagery, how it is created, and how to interpret it. Even the METAR, TAF, SYNOP, and radiosonde formats get their own sections, complete with decoding instructions.

Topping off the book is an appendix with surface and upper-level station plot models, a vast technical glossary compiled from the depths of the NWS, SPC, and NCEP, and much more! Whether you are a hobbyist, private forecaster, a professional, or a student, the Weather Map Handbook is the book you can’t be without.

How can a weather nerd not love this book?!?! - Fred Gossage - Pell City, AL USA
This has to be one of the best desk references out there for any forecaster or weather hobbyist. Tim lays out what each chart, model prog, diagram, satellite image, and radar product is used for... and then gives you multiple internet links for you to use to find real-time data for yourself. This is an excellent companion to the Weather Forecasting Handbook (the purple book), and any excellent desk reference for any forecaster!

An Updated Edition of the Classic Text

Polymers constitute the basis for the plastics, rubber, adhesives, fiber, and coating industries. The Fourth Edition of Introduction to Physical Polymer Science acknowledges the industrial success of polymers and the advancements made in the field while continuing to deliver the comprehensive introduction to polymer science that made its predecessors classic texts.

The Fourth Edition continues its coverage of amorphous and crystalline materials, glass transitions, rubber elasticity, and mechanical behavior, and offers updated discussions of polymer blends, composites, and interfaces, as well as such basics as molecular weight determination. Thus, interrelationships among molecular structure, morphology, and mechanical behavior of polymers continue to provide much of the value of the book.

Newly introduced topics include:
* Nanocomposites, including carbon nanotubes and exfoliated montmorillonite clays
* The structure, motions, and functions of DNA and proteins, as well as the interfaces of polymeric biomaterials with living organisms
* The glass transition behavior of nano-thin plastic films

In addition, new sections have been included on fire retardancy, friction and wear, optical tweezers, and more.

Introduction to Physical Polymer Science, Fourth Edition provides both an essential introduction to the field as well as an entry point to the latest research and developments in polymer science and engineering, making it an indispensable text for chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, and polymer science and engineering students and professionals.

Encyclopedia of Volcanoes

Encyclopedia of Volcanoes

gotoshop

Product Details

Volcanoes are unquestionably one of the most spectacular and awe-inspiring features of the physical world. Our paradoxical fascination with them stems from their majestic beauty and powerful, if sometimes deadly, destructiveness.
Notwithstanding the tremendous advances in volcanology since ancient times, some of the mystery surrounding volcanic eruptions remains today. The Encyclopedia of Volcanoes summarizes our present knowledge of volcanoes. Through its thematic organization around the melting of the earth, it provides a comprehensive source of information on the multidisciplinary influences of volcanic eruptions--both the destructive as well as the beneficial aspects.
The majority of the chapters focus on the geoscience-related aspects of volcanism (radioactive heat source, melting rock, ascent of magma, surface phenomena associated with exiting magma, extraterrestrial volcanism, etc.). In addition, complementary chapters discuss the multidisciplinary aspects of volcanism; these include the history of volcanology, geothermal energy resources, interaction with the oceans and atmosphere, health aspects of volcanism, mitigation of volcanic disasters, post-eruption ecology, and the impact of eruptions on organismal biodiversity.

In addition to its appeal to educators, students, and professional and amateur scientists, the Encyclopedia of Volcanoes functions as an important information resource for administrators and officials responsible for developing and implementing volcanic hazard mitigation around the world.

* The first and only reference work to cover all aspects of volcanology
* More than 80 separate peer-reviewed articles--all original contributions by leading authors from major institutions of science around the world, commissioned for this work
* An integrated transition from the volcanic process through hazards, risk, and societal impacts, with an emphasis on how volcanoes have influenced and shaped society
* Convenient single-volume format with topics arranged thematically--articles provide coverage of nine different aspects of volcanology
* Each entry in the Encyclopedia begins with an outline of the article content and a concise definition of the subject of the article
* 3,000 Glossary entries explain key terms
* Further Reading lists appear at the end of each entry
* Extensive cross-referencing system links related articles
* Sixteen pages of color will convey the science and excitement of this often violent phenomena
* Large 8 1/2" x 11" page size, easy-to-read double-column format

oveerview - PMO - OK
The Encyclopedia of Volcanoes is a methodical by the number overview of most if not all of the known active and inactive volcanoes on earth, with a narrative on the different types of volcanoes and how they are formed. Included is also an explanation of the "mega volcanoes" otherwise known as "calderas" and how these can have a global effect on world climate and lifeforms. Such a wide coverage limits the in-depth geologic knowledge which would probably be beyond the casual reader anyway.

Geology Applied to Engineering

Geology Applied to Engineering

gotoshop

Product Details

West purposely developed a versatile text for bridging the gap between geology and civil engineering that can be used in engineering geology courses taught by either geologists or engineers. Mindful that students enrolled in these courses have diverse backgrounds, the author provides basic information on minerals and rocks, geological processes, and geological investigation techniques. He addresses the relationship of physical aspects of geology to engineering construction and explains how to recognize and provide for geologic factors that affect the location, design, construction, and maintenance of engineering projects.

Engineering applications throughout the text emphasize the direct association of geology and engineering, while sufficient depth in geologic subjects provides a working knowledge of applied geology. Exercises at the end of each chapter are designed for chapter review and problem solving. Some of the end-of-chapter exercises form the basis for laboratory studies on minerals, rocks, maps, geologic processes, and applied geology. Additional problem sets give students an opportunity to relate geologic detail to engineering construction. The liberal array of photos, maps, and diagrams provide extra detail to clarify new concepts.

Informative but LONG winded - M. Witcher -
IF you are a scientist this book will seem a little elementary and mildly informative.
To everyone else, while informative, the entire book could have been condensed into 100 pages.
There are long expanses of drearily written episodes that would have been better
served being in bullet point.
To the uninformed reader, this is a good, basic introduction to human toxicology and
the indifference that is encountered regarding human sensitivity to money making chemicals.

Precious! - Luis Mansilla Miranda - ViƱa del Mar, Chile
Al last!. I finally finished this book that I have been reading, little by little, since the 8.8 earthquake in Chile. Like the Mitochondria book, these pages are not simple and every page is full of information. This book is interesting from the dragonfly on the cover till the Glossary at the end. It is a book about how oxigen flourished on earth but at the same time how species have to deal with the inevitable process of oxidation, an issue that is tightly related to the theory of ageing. Inflammation, the immune system response to foreigners is also covered in this book, making sence to some of the virtues of Aspirin.
Mitochondria and Oxygen, as far as I know, do not have a spanish translation. But the book about the "Ten Great Inventions of Evolution", from this very same author and that cover all these issues but lightly, can be found in spanish, a book for everyone.
