Basic Well Log Analysis, 2nd Edition

Basic Well Log Analysis, 2nd Edition

gotoshop

Product Details

Basic Well Log Analysis is a general introduction to common openhole logging measurements, both wire line and MWD/LWD, and the interpretation of those measurements to determine the traditional analytical goals of porosity, fluid saturation, and lithology/mineralogy. It is arranged by the interpretation goals of the data, rather than by the underlying physics of the measurements.

The accompanying CD-ROM contains digital versions of the data from the case studies, a summary guide to the measurements and their interpretation, and a simple spreadsheet containing some of the more common interpretation algorithms.

This Second Edition of Basic Well Log Analysis delivers a great impact on training and self-training along with superior workbook exercises, newer measurements, borehole imaging, and nuclear magnetic resonance in separate chapters, all directed to provide a guide through the lengthy and sometimes ambiguous terminology of well logging and petrophysics. It provides readers with interpretation examples (and solutions) so that the techniques described here can be practiced.

Customer Reviews ::

Better than nothing - John T. Knight -
This book is OK but that is about as far as it goes. A lot of information is presented but there is not really any step-by-step guidance. It reminds me of the log interpretation book you can download from the Schlumberger website for free. The excercises at the back of the book were a good idea that was implemented poorly. In excercise 1 you get the impression that the authors were looking at slightly different logs than those presented, given the partial answers and comentary shown. In excercise 2, they ARE looking at different logs. They present the exact same eletric logs twice. The second time, the electric logs have a porosity header...but it the same electric log previously shown. Have fun figuring out what the porosity is supposed to be for that excercise. Disappointing.

The Ecology of Fishes on Coral Reefs

The Ecology of Fishes on Coral Reefs

gotoshop

Product Details

This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the ecology of coral reef fishes presented by top researchers from North America and Australia. Immense strides have been made over the past twenty years in our understanding of ecological systems in general and of reef fish ecology in particular. Many of the methodologies that reef fish ecologists use in their studies will be useful to a wider audience of ecologists for the design of their ecological studies. Significant among the impacts of the research on reef fish ecology are the development of nonequilibrium models of community organization, more emphasis on the role of recruitment variability in structuring local assemblages, the development and testing of evolutionary models of social organization and reproductive biology, and new insights into predator-prey and plant-herbivore interactions.

Carl lives on among billions and billions of minds - F. Ather - Los Angeles, CA United States
An amazing book by an amazing man. Carl Sagan is one of my heroes who has shown me how breathtaking the universe is. In this book, Sagan speaks very personally about matters deep to him, issues he was engaged in during his life. He presents arguments like the Prisoner's Dilemma and his solution to the arms race.

The book ends with him talking about his last round of cancer therapy, and is then completed by his wonderful wife Ann Druyan. Though Carl is no longer with us, his memory lives on in the minds of billions of earthlings now and I hope all future generations will appreciate this great man as I do.

Environmental Isotopes in Hydrogeology

Environmental Isotopes in Hydrogeology

gotoshop

Product Details

Groundwater is an increasingly important resource to human populations around the world, and the study and protection of groundwater is an essential part of hydrogeology - the subset of hydrology that concentrates on the subsurface. Environmental isotopes, naturally occurring nuclides in water and solutes, have become fundamental tools for tracing the recharge, history, and contamination of groundwater.

Customer Reviews ::

Good text for advanced undergraduate/graduate students - Kevin Zelnio - Beaufort, NC USA
I read this book for a Stable Isotope Geochemistry class as an undergraduate at UC-Davis and found it moderately understandable. My background is in ecology and as a grad student now I am using stable isotopes to answer ecological questions. I still refer to this text and even compare some of my values to values used in the text. It is well-indexed and easy to find specific subjects. Though the writing is fairly dry, there are plenty of graphs and diagrams that are very informative and display the trends and concepts satisfactorily. I wonder though if some of the data they use is a outdated. They often cite work from 1970's and earlier and I don't know if there might have been some changes in methodology and increases in applications. This book is heavily biased on freshwater systems and I would like to see a new edition with a chapter on marine applications/problems/things to consider etc. All in all I would recommend it to advanced undergraduates and higher in geology, geography, ecology, environmental sciences and those wishing to learn about isotope fractionation and its uses in science generally.

Great coverage; however pictures are all in black and white - Andrew -
The book is a visual disappointment. I have seen some of these photos in other locations, and they are beautiful. This book shrinks and presents all photos, chart and graphs in gray. Good pictures add quite a bit to a text, and the lack of good pictures subtract substantially from this text. On the other hand the seller has great service, and having the text in low quality black and white may keep the cost down. The information presented in this text is easy to read well written accurate and up to date.

Yes and no. . . - Rolf Jochen Thiele - Pacific Grove, Ca United States
This book left a mixed impression. Yes, the meteorological content might be up to date. Sometimes the content is very short, sometimes the style is very boring and old-fashioned. No, this book is not well illustrated. Most of the graphics look awful. Handmade illustrations are not longer good enough for a specialist publication in the 3rd millenium. I had better save my money.

The Great Ocean Conveyor: Discovering the Trigger for Abrupt Climate Change

The Great Ocean Conveyor: Discovering the Trigger for Abrupt Climate Change

gotoshop

Product Details

Wally Broecker is one of the world's leading authorities on abrupt global climate change. More than two decades ago, he discovered the link between ocean circulation and climate change, in particular how shutdowns of the Great Ocean Conveyor--the vast network of currents that circulate water, heat, and nutrients around the globe--triggered past ice ages. Today, he is among the researchers exploring how our planet's climate system can abruptly "flip-flop" from one state to another, and who are weighing the implications for the future. In The Great Ocean Conveyor, Broecker introduces readers to the science of abrupt climate change while providing a vivid, firsthand account of the field's history and development.

Could global warming cause the conveyor to shut down again, prompting another flip-flop in climate? What were the repercussions of past climate shifts? How do we know such shifts occurred? Broecker shows how Earth scientists study ancient ice cores and marine sediments to probe Earth's distant past, and how they blend scientific detective work with the latest technological advances to try to predict the future. He traces how the science has evolved over the years, from the blind alleys and wrong turns to the controversies and breathtaking discoveries. Broecker describes the men and women behind the science, and reveals how his own thinking about abrupt climate change has itself flip-flopped as new evidence has emerged.

Rich with personal stories and insights, The Great Ocean Conveyor opens a tantalizing window onto how Earth science is practiced.

Fascinating Story, But Written in Heavy Scientific Terms - Frederick S. Goethel - Central Valley, CA
This book tells the story of the discovery of one of the most amazing aspects of our oceans...the ability of the water to circulate and transmit salinity and temperature from one area of the world to another. It also details how this movement affects air temperatures in various regions and what would happen if the system were disrupted. It describes, it detail, how the author set the hypothesis, and then went about proving that such a geologic system existed. It also details findings that contradicted the author's assumptions and how that affected the thought process. The process was a puzzle, with each new piece adding, and sometimes subtracting, from the entire end result.

The book is readable and enjoyable, but I would warn readers that it is heavily scientific and there is a lot of knowledge of geology and chemistry needed to fully appreciate the story. If you don't know your isotopes of oxygen, or have a strong feeling for geologic time, you will have a very difficult time reading this book.

Introduction to the Plant Life of Southern California: Coast to Foothills (California Natural History Guides)

Introduction to the Plant Life of Southern California: Coast to Foothills (California Natural History Guides)

gotoshop

Product Details

Field guides often provide little ecological information, or context, for understanding the plants they identify. This book, with its engaging text and attractive illustrations, for the first time provides an ecological framework for the plants and their environments in the coast and foothill regions of Southern California, an area that boasts an extremely rich flora. It will introduce a wide audience--from general readers and students to natural history and outdoor enthusiasts--to Southern California's plant communities, their ecological dynamics, and the key plants that grow in them.
Coastal beach and dune habitats, coastal and interior sage scrub, chaparral, woodlands, grasslands, riparian woodlands, and wetlands all contribute unique plant assemblages to Southern California. In addition to discussing each of these areas in depth, this book also emphasizes ecological factors such as drought, seasonal temperatures, and fire that determine which plants can thrive in each community. It covers such important topics as non-native invasive plants and other issues involved with preserving biodiversity in the ecologically rich yet heavily populated and increasingly threatened area. * 327 color photographs provide overviews of each plant community and highlight key plant species

* Describes more than 300 plant species
* Covers the counties of Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, western Riverside, San Bernardino, and the Channel Islands
* Includes a list of public areas and parks for viewing Southern California's plant communities

The Biosphere: Complete Annotated Edition

The Biosphere: Complete Annotated Edition

gotoshop

Product Details

Though long unknown in the West, Vladimir Vernadsky's The Biosphere, first published in 1926, revolutionized our view of life on Earth. In it he set forth his idea that the emergence of life can be viewed as an astrophysical phenomenon subject to physical laws governing the interactions of matter and energy, and that the biosphere has profound effects on Earth's climate, its landforms, and the contents of its atmosphere. These ideas helped found numerous scientific fields and originated the concept of life a geological force that forms the foundation of Gaia theory. Although Vernadsky's work diffused across the Iron Curtain out of Soviet Russia only slowly and indirectly, the concept of the biosphere in use today is largely his.

With this milestone publication of the first English translation of the entire text, English-speaking readers can at last read one of the great classics of modern science in their own language. Mark McMenamin has written extensive annotations to explain the structure of Vernadsky's arguments and their modern relevance, Jacques Grinvald has provided an introduction that places the book in historical context, and a stellar cast of international experts have co-signed the foreword.

Customer Reviews ::

A Hidden Revolution - Dr A Gustafson - Australia
I have had the honour of reading numerous papers by Vernadsky and find as always with genius, a hidden underlaying dimension of truth. The Biosphere is without hesitation a work of scientific spirituality as well as pure scientific genius! In a time when environmental destruction is ramp, and politically controled scientific stupidity proliferates, logical hope and science is at hand. With Vernadsky science personifies a bridge between life and its meaning. Science is indeed the search for truth, and Vernadsky biosphere is a must for youth!!!!!
