Boyer ensuring he gets money for himself - Aeries - Virginia
Now, don't get me wrong, this book is very well put together and very informative. I learned a lot from the class and can honestly say that I have a much firmer grasp on the world in general from reading this book and taking the class.

However, it really upsets me that Boyer has set up the class to make it mandatory that each student buy a NEW copy of the book each semester. This book costs -90 new, and cannot be resold for much more than a few dollars since it will never be reused.

It bothers me even more because he claims that it's all the evil publishing company's fault that he has to use the access codes that can only come with a new copy of the book, and so on and so on... That's a bunch of crap. Even if he needs to use a third party site for testing, access codes can be supplied independently if he wanted them to be, for a minimal cost by comparison.

Now, I understand he has to update parts of the book due to shifting world events semester to semester, but this could be handled much better. He could write a standard history up to whatever point for each region, and add addendum as necessary and post them on his website that he loves so much.

So while I learned a lot from the class and the book, his selling practices are inexcusable. His fans will try to offer excuses, but it doesn't change the fact that he is draining students of excessive amounts of money each semester that could be avoided.

Outdated, more disleased with seller than anything. - jonz -
It's a very flimsy book, but i really needed the software data that comes with it. There was a huge scratch on the disc that looked like someone deliberately cut the CD. This book in NO way is comparable to modern editions and should not be used as such. Also, it was shipped in a shoe box... this should have been my first indication of a bad buy.

Aqueous Environmental Geochemistry

Product Details

Langmuir provides a thorough presentation of natural chemical concentrations, systems and processes to help readers (1) understand controls on the chemical quality of surface and subsurface waters, and (2) distinguish between the natural and the anthropogenic. Unlike most authors, whose civil/sanitary engineering backgrounds promote a more aquatic chemistry perspective, LangmuirUs geology/geochemistry experience focuses coverage on the chemical interactions between water and geological materials. The book provides valuable training in using in the geochemical computer code MINTEQA2 as an integral problem-solving tool.

Good book but...................... - Deb Schotman - Raalte, Netherlands
I have read the book for school, when I had classes in geopolitics. An zich an amazingly interesting field of study. I only dont seem to understand why we got this in the geography faculty and not in the history one. Since this subject is one 100 % history if you ask me. If you like to learn something about nationalism, imperialism and nations, the working, the history and that sort of related subjects, this is your book. But I warn you Taylor surely is everything else than a plesant writer. He begins to explain things and goes on pages later, creating interuptions that are to large, so that sometimes the book was a bit to chaotic to me. The level of English was to scientific, although that Im not a native speaker, so most poeople would not find this a problem. I learned alot from Taylor that I can use in my field of history, but I had to take the course twice, and read the book maybe about 6 or 7 times before I began to understand what this was all about. And still then there is so much information in there you like to remember, that its impossible to do so.

If you ask me and you like to learn about geopolitics there were other writers that were more my cup of tea. Such as Machiavelli, Fukuyama and last but not least Samuel Huntington, all these books are easier to read and will privide you with alot beter insight in how certain things are working. I had my first class in geopolitics on the 11th od september. We talked all morning about power and how this was devided in the world, when I came home walked into the living room and saw the second plain crasing into the WTC. So quite an interesting way to begin.

Colorado Geology - nja - Mountains
It is great fun to be traveling along the highway and read about the various rock strata. Tidbits of information such as the fact that a nuclear bomb was exploded at the bottom of a well near Rulison to see if the fractured rock would release more natural gas, however the gas from the well was slightly radioactive and couldn't be used. The well is now sealed off and no drilling is allowed in the vicinity.
We are enjoying this book.

Soils and Geomorphology

Soils and Geomorphology

gotoshop

Product Details

Soils and Geomorphology, now in its third edition, remains popular among soil scientists, geomorphologists, geologists, geographers, and archaeologists. While retaining the useful "factors of soil formation format," it has been extensively revised, incorporating a considerable amount of new research and offering a greater number of topics and examples -- particularly in the chapters "Weathering and Soil Development with Time" and "Topography: Soil Relations with Time in Different Climatic Settings." Greater emphasis is placed on the role of dust in pedogenesis, and new data are included on tropical soil development, global soil-loess relations, neotectonics, and reduction processes. The text discusses field applications such as the use of soils in recognizing climate change, estimating the age of geological deposits, and dealing with environmental problems such as acid rain. New "how-to" appendices on soil descriptions and calculating the profile development index are also included. Soils and Geomorphology is an ideal text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in courses on pedology, soil science, Quaternary geology, archeology, and sedimentary petrology.

Eating the Sun: How Plants Power the Planet

Eating the Sun: How Plants Power the Planet

gotoshop

Product Details

Wherever there is greenery, photosynthesis is working to make oxygen, release energy, and create living matter from the raw material of sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. Without photosynthesis, there would be an empty world, an empty sky, and a sun that does nothing more than warm the rocks and reflect off the sea.

Eating the Sun is the story of a world in crisis; an appreciation of the importance of plants; a history of the earth and the feuds and fantasies of warring scientists; a celebration of how the smallest things, enzymes and pigments, influence the largest things, the oceans, the rainforests, and the fossil fuel economy. Oliver Morton offers a fascinating, lively, profound look at nature's greatest miracle and sounds a much-needed call to arms—illuminating a potential crisis of climatic chaos and explaining how we can change our situation, for better or for worse.

from chloroplast to global warming: the history of green things - R. M. Williams - tucson, arizona USA
popular science tends to be written by one of two types of people. scientists who have decided that telling the world about science is as important as working in their lab and writers, usually journalists from magazines that got interested in some aspect of science, wrote a longish piece and then thought enough to make it into a book. this author is the second type but he writes, especially the first 1/3 of the book, on chlorophyll like a passionate scientist. good stuff.

the first part reminded me of _crystal fire, another popular science book that approached the topic both historically and by making the people come alive as in a good novel, coupled with good science. neat trick, rarely done well, which makes my first reading recommendation any of the first 3 chapters, to decide if you want to pursue the whole thing. it's on the higher side of science, potentially a bit of a slough for some, stick with it, finish one chapter before you give up.

the second 1/3 of the book is the level up from chlorophyll, the plants and how they interact with the environment. a lot less science, a lot more speculation and i must admit my enthusiasm waned a bit here. however i could see his big idea and really wanted to understand the whole thing. for this reason, if you decide to read the whole book, read it front to back, some of the meaning is in the relationships built up sequentially, which you'll miss jumping around as i often read.

the last roughly 1/3 is about global warming plus. unfortunately somewhere here my attention continued to wane and reading became looking a words on paper and lost that absorption that was so present earlier. if the author releases another edition it would be nice to see if this could be rewritten to the same level as the first 3rd. what imho is lacking is that person story structure he uses so effectively in part 1. the structure is him walking and thinking about his place and though interesting not as convincing as the interplay of personalities before.

it's a good book. important and timely topic, but best of all it is a good jumpoff point to recommend to get everyone up to speed on these crucial issues: mankind and our effects on our environment. i could see it as a textbook or reading group choice.

note:
fitting together as well as acorns and their shells or a couple spooning. he has a novelist's command of word pictures.

Stunning and Disappointing - axeeugene - Minneapolis-Saint Paul
This review is written from the perspective of a layperson; I have no formal training in the sciences, let alone any expertise in paleontology. Please take what follows with that in mind.

Over the last year and a half I have read all the books on the Burgess Shale-type lagerstatte I could find. These include Stephen Jay Gould's "Wonderful Life", Simon Conway Morris's "The Crucible of Creation", and "The Fossils of the Burgess Shale" by Derek Briggs, et al. Of these three, "The Cambrian Fossils of Chengjiang China" is most like the last. It is more a photographic and taxonomic survey of these ancient fossils than it is a study of modes of life at the time. There is little discussion in the text regarding the possible relationships between organisms presented, and minimal explanation of how researchers have arrived at the conclusions they have about each fossil. Because of this, I find "The Cambrian Fossils of Chengjiang China" a disappointment.

As a layperson, I am searching for a deeper understanding of how the researchers engaged in this important and fascinating work do their jobs. What knowledge, understanding, skill, artistry, theory, and simple good fortune does it take to make decisions, for example, about the affinities between arthropods like Kunmingella and Isoxys, for one? Couldn't the authors have taken us through this process, to provide us with opportunities to think? Absent any discussion on such subjects, the book fails to keep me interested, and I feel like I'm not learning as much as I should be. It becomes a pretty picture book.

I've found the law of diminishing returns has been operating for me in this endeavor. The most interesting and engaging of these books has been Gould's (and yes, there are errors and missteps in his work, but it is also the most expansive and carefully explanatory), with Conway Morris's a distant second (though obviously more *accurate*). The photos in Briggs, et al. are wonderful, and really help to enlighten a study of the prior two texts, but they are all in black and white.

It is in the photography, then, where "The Cambrian Fossils of Chengjiang China" absolutely shines. These photographic plates are all in color, and there are many dozens! One could easily lose hours just staring and the images and saying, "WOW!" I know I have. Being able to see these pictures up close is a treat. I am especially happy with the pictures of the lobopods, the phylum to which mystery animal Hallucigenia belongs. Many mysteries become clearer thanks to that section. The images alone *almost* make the high price tag worth it.

I offer a conditional recommendation for this text. If you are a student of the Cambrian and have read at least one of the other texts mentioned above, I believe you will enjoy this. But remember, if you are a layperson you might be frustrated by the text's lack of detailed context, and you'll be faced with reading many almost impenetrably jargoned sentences like the following: "Distal to the basis, the endopod consists of seven podomeres including a distal claw. At least in the larger appendages the basis and proximal two podomeres each have and endite with spines. The exopod is attached to the basis, and at least the proximal part of the first podomere of the endopod." This gets tiring after a while, even for a relatively well-educated person like me.

This is a beautiful book, and informative to people with a background in paleontology or biology. It fits well next to the other texts mentioned. I'm glad I have it. Even so, I'm less pleased than I'd hoped I would be.

Introduction to Paleobiology and the Fossil Record

Introduction to Paleobiology and the Fossil Record

gotoshop

Product Details

This book presents a comprehensive overview of the science of the history of life. Paleobiologists bring many analytical tools to bear in interpreting the fossil record and the book introduces the latest techniques, from multivariate investigations of biogeography and biostratigraphy to engineering analysis of dinosaur skulls, and from homeobox genes to cladistics.

All the well-known fossil groups are included, including microfossils and invertebrates, but an important feature is the thorough coverage of plants, vertebrates and trace fossils together with discussion of the origins of both life and the metazoans. All key related subjects are introduced, such as systematics, ecology, evolution and development, stratigraphy and their roles in understanding where life came from and how it evolved and diversified.

Unique features of the book are the numerous case studies from current research that lead students to the primary literature, analytical and mathematical explanations and tools, together with associated problem sets and practical schedules for instructors and students.

“..any serious student of geology who does not pick this book off the shelf will be putting themselves at a huge disadvantage. The material may be complex, but the text is extremely accessible and well organized, and the book ought to be essential reading for palaeontologists at undergraduate, postgraduate and more advanced levels—both in Britain as well as in North America.” Falcon-Lang, H., Proc. Geol. Assoc. 2010

“…this is an excellent introduction to palaeontology in general. It is well structured, accessibly written and pleasantly informative …..I would recommend this as a standard reference text to all my students without hesitation.” David Norman Geol Mag 2010
