Basic Well Log Analysis, 2nd Edition

Basic Well Log Analysis, 2nd Edition

gotoshop

Product Details

Basic Well Log Analysis is a general introduction to common openhole logging measurements, both wire line and MWD/LWD, and the interpretation of those measurements to determine the traditional analytical goals of porosity, fluid saturation, and lithology/mineralogy. It is arranged by the interpretation goals of the data, rather than by the underlying physics of the measurements.

The accompanying CD-ROM contains digital versions of the data from the case studies, a summary guide to the measurements and their interpretation, and a simple spreadsheet containing some of the more common interpretation algorithms.

This Second Edition of Basic Well Log Analysis delivers a great impact on training and self-training along with superior workbook exercises, newer measurements, borehole imaging, and nuclear magnetic resonance in separate chapters, all directed to provide a guide through the lengthy and sometimes ambiguous terminology of well logging and petrophysics. It provides readers with interpretation examples (and solutions) so that the techniques described here can be practiced.

Customer Reviews ::

Better than nothing - John T. Knight -
This book is OK but that is about as far as it goes. A lot of information is presented but there is not really any step-by-step guidance. It reminds me of the log interpretation book you can download from the Schlumberger website for free. The excercises at the back of the book were a good idea that was implemented poorly. In excercise 1 you get the impression that the authors were looking at slightly different logs than those presented, given the partial answers and comentary shown. In excercise 2, they ARE looking at different logs. They present the exact same eletric logs twice. The second time, the electric logs have a porosity header...but it the same electric log previously shown. Have fun figuring out what the porosity is supposed to be for that excercise. Disappointing.

The Biosphere: Complete Annotated Edition

The Biosphere: Complete Annotated Edition

gotoshop

Product Details

Though long unknown in the West, Vladimir Vernadsky's The Biosphere, first published in 1926, revolutionized our view of life on Earth. In it he set forth his idea that the emergence of life can be viewed as an astrophysical phenomenon subject to physical laws governing the interactions of matter and energy, and that the biosphere has profound effects on Earth's climate, its landforms, and the contents of its atmosphere. These ideas helped found numerous scientific fields and originated the concept of life a geological force that forms the foundation of Gaia theory. Although Vernadsky's work diffused across the Iron Curtain out of Soviet Russia only slowly and indirectly, the concept of the biosphere in use today is largely his.

With this milestone publication of the first English translation of the entire text, English-speaking readers can at last read one of the great classics of modern science in their own language. Mark McMenamin has written extensive annotations to explain the structure of Vernadsky's arguments and their modern relevance, Jacques Grinvald has provided an introduction that places the book in historical context, and a stellar cast of international experts have co-signed the foreword.

A Hidden Revolution - Dr A Gustafson - Australia
I have had the honour of reading numerous papers by Vernadsky and find as always with genius, a hidden underlaying dimension of truth. The Biosphere is without hesitation a work of scientific spirituality as well as pure scientific genius! In a time when environmental destruction is ramp, and politically controled scientific stupidity proliferates, logical hope and science is at hand. With Vernadsky science personifies a bridge between life and its meaning. Science is indeed the search for truth, and Vernadsky biosphere is a must for youth!!!!!

Political Geography provides a comprehensive understanding of the geo-political landscape whilst addressing the rapidly changing nature of politics today.

Customer Reviews ::

Good book but...................... - Deb Schotman - Raalte, Netherlands
I have read the book for school, when I had classes in geopolitics. An zich an amazingly interesting field of study. I only dont seem to understand why we got this in the geography faculty and not in the history one. Since this subject is one 100 % history if you ask me. If you like to learn something about nationalism, imperialism and nations, the working, the history and that sort of related subjects, this is your book. But I warn you Taylor surely is everything else than a plesant writer. He begins to explain things and goes on pages later, creating interuptions that are to large, so that sometimes the book was a bit to chaotic to me. The level of English was to scientific, although that Im not a native speaker, so most poeople would not find this a problem. I learned alot from Taylor that I can use in my field of history, but I had to take the course twice, and read the book maybe about 6 or 7 times before I began to understand what this was all about. And still then there is so much information in there you like to remember, that its impossible to do so.

If you ask me and you like to learn about geopolitics there were other writers that were more my cup of tea. Such as Machiavelli, Fukuyama and last but not least Samuel Huntington, all these books are easier to read and will privide you with alot beter insight in how certain things are working. I had my first class in geopolitics on the 11th od september. We talked all morning about power and how this was devided in the world, when I came home walked into the living room and saw the second plain crasing into the WTC. So quite an interesting way to begin.

Lame, at best - D. Leonhard - South Charleston, OH
I totally agree with the two negative review above. This book is unnecessarily obtuse. You should look elsewhere if you are a total beginner. The information does not need to be presented in such a dry, academic manner.

Seawater, Second Edition: Its Composition, Properties and Behaviour

Seawater, Second Edition: Its Composition, Properties and Behaviour

gotoshop

Product Details

'Seawater' has been substantially updated in this second edition to take account of recent developments in marine science. Sections dealing with difficult physical and chemical concepts have been developed on the basis of feedback from the first edition, making this an ideal learning tool for oceanography students.

Chapter 1 summarizes the special properties of water and the role of the oceans in the hydraulic cycle. The distribution of temperature and salinity in the oceans and how they influence water density and movements is then discussed. Light and sound in seawater are considered next, along with some uses of acoustics. These are followed by an examination of the composition and behaviour of dissolved constituents, including such topics as residence times, the control of pH, and redox relationships.

Finally, the history of seawater and its role in global cycles is reviewed, with special reference to climatic change and the CO2 problem.

Customer Reviews ::

Watered down by Kindle - Vincent W. Herlihy -
On reading the sample on the Kindle, this textbook appeared to present a comprehensive basic review of seawater in a cogent and very readable manner. However, its tables and diagrams as displayed on the Kindle are so reduced in size as to be illegible. The lack of color transmission, and the failure of the font size function to effect these figure elements, makes the value of downloading this textbook questionable.

California Geology (2nd Edition)

California Geology (2nd Edition)

gotoshop

Product Details

This interesting book uses plate tectonics as its central theme; it acquaints readers with California geology. Basic principles in the beginning of the book and tables of highlights for each province enable the reader to understand the whole picture of catastrophic national disasters, California history, mining methods, and societal impacts; it brings the lessons of geology closer to the everyday context of California life. After a comprehensive overview of the basic principles of geology, this book then focuses on the geological highlights of California (young volcanoes, deserts, the Mojave Desert, the Sierra Nevada, the Klamath Mountains, water, the Great Valley, the coast Ranges, earthquakes, faults, and seismic safety, the transverse ranges, and the peninsular ranges). The inside back and front covers of the book contain a wealth of readily available information, with comprehensive geologic, fault, relief, and mountain range maps. A handy desk reference for geologists, this book is also a source of information for anyone interested in the evolution of California's terrain.

Customer Reviews ::

Worth it - Ori Sartono - Fresno, CA
This book gets me through the California Supplemental Examination for my PG. It is easy to read and understand (if you are a geologist), without making the book less the substance.

I like how Harden pictures one geologic event. The examples of places names are a familiar one, thus (if you live long enough in California) you can relate to them.

It is definitely one to keep.
